Dr. Salley graduated with his medical degree from Louisiana State University in 1977. Following medical school, he completed his internship with the University of South Alabama Medical Center. Driven to further his education, Dr. Salley went on to obtain his fellowship at Vanderbilt University Hospital. He completed several residencies within the University of South Alabama Medical Center, the University of Rochester, and Greenlane Hospital.

Robert K. Salley, MD, attended Louisiana State University School of Medicine and received his medical degree in 1977. He served his internship and general surgery residency at the University of South Alabama Medical Center in Mobile, Alabama (1977-1982). Furthermore, he conducted his cardiothoracic surgery fellowship at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, TN (1980-1981), as well as his cardiothoracic residency at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry in Rochester, NY (1982-1984) and congenital cardiovascular residency at Greenlane Clinical Centre in Auckland, New Zealand (1984-1985). In addition, Dr. Salley received board certification in cardiothoracic surgery from the American Board of Thoracic Surgery. And, he remains at the forefront of his challenging specialty via memberships and affiliations with local, state, national, and international professional societies and associations. As a result, he is a member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the American College of Cardiology, the American Medical Association, the American College of Chest Physicians, the Internal Society of Cardiac Surgery, the Lexington Surgical Society, the New York Academy of Sciences, the Thoracic Surgery Director’s Association, the American College of Surgeons, the American College of Angiology, the Association for Academic Surgery, the Kentucky State Medical Society, the Mahoney Society, University of Rochester, the Royal Society of Medicine, the Southeastern Pediatric Cardiology Society, and the Kentucky Commission for Handicapped Children.
